Loft

It's only taken 18 months since I moved in, but I'm finally posting some pictures of my loft. Some people recently mentioned that they wondered what my place is like, so here you go.

That poster!? I've had that for a while, but only received the mounting rails yesterday. The poster is circa 1973, an original french one-sheet (47 x 63 inches) that I bought on eBay at 4:15 AM early one Saturday morning last year. The folds are intentional - that's how french film posters come. The movie advertised is "Duel" -- my all-time favourite film. The rails I finally found online from a company in the states -- unfortunately the shipping and customs handling coming to Canada was pretty terrible, so I'm not going to recommend them here. If you are interested in this product, email me and I will give you the details.

Anyway, hope you like the pictures of my loft. More to come...

I'm not certain, but I think this song contains a sample from the Duel soundtrack, as Dennis Weaver is staring down the truck that's stopped blocking the road ahead...

Jim

I'm currently in the process of writing a soundtrack for the video game my friend Jim is making: Jugglin'

It's proving to be a fairly difficult process... in fact, I have a touch of writers block right now. But, I have a plan -- I am going to try and rework this to feel like a movie soundtrack using a reoccurring riff with variations based on it.

Wish me luck! I'll post when the game (and it's sweet music) are available for downloadin'

Exhausted

<rant>

Why do most north american cars have their exhaust tips on the right hand side? I'm not sure of the reasoning, but after having a number of trucks and badly running crapmobiles spew carbon monoxide at me on the sidewalk this morning, I would recommend this practice be changed.

</rant>

Speaking of cars, gas prices finally breached $1.00 per litre yesterday. Funny thing is that this has caused a mini Y2K issue... most gas stations simply don't have a 3-digit display (actually, 4 digits are needed i.e. 100.0). The nearest station to my home turned their sign off and put a hand scrawled sign out front. Classy. This morning the price was 99.9, so the sign was on again. I still think gasoline prices should be fixed like electricity and the fluxuations be absorbed with a decent average price that could be visited on a quarterly / yearly basis.

Maybe I should have kept the "<rant>" tag open longer?

Oh! I also saw a car driving the wrong way down a one-way street this morning. That was interesting. They never encountered any other cars (due to a gap in traffic going the proper direction), they made a turn and carried on their way. I wish I had had my camera.

Note: the song below is open source audio and can be freely downloaded using the links provided. I think this cover of a famous theme is just plain excellent. Check out the whole "album" if you have the bandwidth.

New shoes, new house

Bought a new pair of Converse One Stars from Groovy on Queen Street West last night. I think I'm going to post a comparison shot of my new shoes vs. my old daily drivers, a pair of Fluevog "Flame" Angels. They've seen better days.

It took me a while to figure out how to lace them. I haven't bought lace-up running shoes in an exceptionally long time. This site helped me immensely: Ian's Shoelace Site. Ultimately, I ended up creating my own variant of "Straight (Fashion) Lacing" described there.

They look good, but the walk to work has already raised a blister the size of Wyoming on my right foot. Yay.

New house? Yes, my sister and her husband have put an offer down on a lovely sounding cottage-style home in Willow Beach, Ontario. They even have beach rights! We've been joking that this might become the Lynch family "compound". Fingers crossed that the inspection and paperwork all lines up!

Top Gear

I think Top Gear is my favourite TV show.

It's a BBC programme, rebroadcast on BBC World here in Toronto. Unfortunately, the BBC World "port" is cut down from an hour long show to 30 minutes, and a lot of segments are trimmed or cut out altogether. So, I looked around online and found that there is a fairly large number of people hosting torrents of these shows. Un-cut.

I downloaded Episode 2 of Season 6 over the last few days. It was a 351MB file, it used approx 1.5GB of data transfer. That seems a tad excessive, but how else can I see these complete shows?

The best part of this episode was the challenge between the three hosts to find a coupe for £1500 or less. They ended up with an ancient BMW 635 and Jag XJS, and a not-so-ancient but generally unheard of Mitsubishi Starion. They put them through a series of tests, which didn't result in a clear winner, but suffice it to say that all 3 cars were pretty well destroyed by the end. A great episode.

Further to podcasting, I've been enjoying the CBCRadio3 Podcast. I'm including it as the song of the day.
