No more dub dub dub

As first mentioned in a previous post, I have deemed the domain prefix www dead, and it is no more on BrendanLynch.com. I had attempted the rewrite before, but the Eolas-patched version of IE 6 wouldn't have it (that, plus opaque embedded flash = crash). I've since changed my site to use SWFObject embedding, and all seems cool. Let me know if you encounter any issues.

Greetings from FITC

This weekend, I'm attending and presenting at FITC -- a large creative and technical design festival in Toronto Canada.

I'm presenting Saturday April 22. My presentation is "Extending XML" -- demonstrating and releasing the br.core.BXML package I wrote with some collegues at Blast Radius. Hopefully the Flash community will find it useful... we sure do.

Check out the FITC website, and if you're attending say "hi" -- I can also offer you a Brendan Lynch trading card!

SHUT THE @#$% UP

Too many people think it's okay to talk in movie theatres. Seat kickers don't phase me much now that there are people texting and talking on their damn cellphones. The point of a movie is to get away for a couple hours, immerse yourself into the story and characters and enjoy. Using your cellphone or any other such bullshit just points out that you should have rented the latest crap from blockbuster and stayed home.

This weekend, I took my family to see Hair as a birthday gift for my Dad. The evening started with seat kickers and shortly thereafter the talking began. There were two 20-something year-old girls behind us who obviously didn't get it, but had no problem telling everyone and laughing at things they found "stupid". Sure, maybe they got dragged to the show by their parents -- fine -- but, respect your parents! I'm sure Hair means a lot to them, and much of the audience.

Now, what's great is that the frustration bubbled over for me, my Mom and my Dad at exactly the same moment. My Dad actually stood up and made eye contact with them -- and we said (you'll note we didn't have this planned, so we said 3 different things):

"For the love of God, be quiet!"

"Shut up and watch the show!"

"Talk later!"

Suffice it to say that they didn't say another word. I know our reaction seems harsh, but we had already tried (as Seinfeld described) "the half turn" and "the full turn" to no avail.

I should say that the show was very well done - the cast in Toronto is very very good, and the modern staging, (simple) sets and video backdrops were excellent. Do go see it if you have a chance. Just be quiet and enjoy the show...

Must stop typing WWW

It's a pretty futile thing to type www. ahead of web addresses these days, yet I still do it. I'm trying to quit. I do type the http:// as Firefox on my mac has the occasional hissy fit that it doesn't seem to know what to do with "flickr.com" or "blogger.com" or "brendanlynch.com". Arrrgh.

I'm considering adding a redirector on my site to force people to brendanlynch.com should they type www.brendanlynch.com.

What are your thoughts on this? Should WWW be put out to pasture?

Moving web hosts

If you can't seem to email me, or parts of my site have gone missing... never fear, they should be back up and running within the next 72 hours. Sorry for the inconvenience!
